Overview

Socio-cultural
approaches to learning and developmental psychology were first organized and
applied by Lev S. Vygotsky and his Russia colleagues in the nineteen-twenties
and thirties (John-Steiner & Mahn, 1996). His work has influenced many people in
education since the late 1960s, and his ideas and concepts can be found in the
theoretical groundwork of many early childhood curricula internationally (Kelly, 2013). At a time when behaviorists were developing simple explanations of human
behavior, Vygotsky developed a theory which examined the psychology of art,
language, thought, learning, and development (John-Steiner & Mahn, 1996).
